There is vast amount of pole mounted transformers and isolators in the UK, Few if any are monitored. However, if any of them fail the cost and inconvenience to the utility and clients can be enormous.
Preventive maintenance can be effected with simple status monitoring such as temperature and Partial Discharge monitoring. By monitoring the acoustic signature and temperature of the pole mounted transformer we can remotely determine its state of energisation and its relative loading. It is also possible, under certain circumstances to determine whether the unit is subject to overload.
After a large storm the location of faults and hence planning of power restoration can take days is not weeks if there is no automatic way of reporting the location of faults. Hence the need for automated fault location.
By non-evasively monitoring the state of energisation of transformer and the position of the circuit breakers it is possible to isolate line faults quickly down to just a few Km of line length without the need for line scouts.
