Bus Telematics

Bus TelematicsRadio-Tech are the secret in the success behind many of the UK's leading bus information schemes in operation today. The latest of such schemes has recently been commissioned in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. Our role in these systems is to provide the vital communications link between the buses, traffic light controllers and bus shelter signs over a high integrity licensed radio data link.

Today we offer a variety of solutions covering the needs of the bus information industry delivered via licensed radio spectrum, fixed IP GPRS communications or PMR radio.

Licensed Bus Information Systems

Our Bus Information product portfolio includes transmitters and receivers for dynamic passenger information signs including features such as timetable updates, countdown time to arrival, traffic light sequence advancing and green wave sequencing. Units can be supplied to operate over almost any part of the VHF Band III radio spectrum or with the new RTIG industry protocol standard.

They include, within a single unit, all the complex data encoding, decoding, error checking and circuitry required to transmit the data to the right destination within the bandwidth constraints of the operating radio licence.

Receivers can be either interfaced serially to the traffic light and sign controllers or via relay cards, enabling the upgrade of existing legacy traffic light controller systems. Transmitters normally take their control form a serial output from the bus's on board computer. Transmitter power is deliberately limited to typically 50mW in order to prevent the common PMR radio problem of overlap and spectrum contention in congested city centres.

Bus Information Services via the Wyless Fixed IP GPRS Network

A new alternative using our strategic alliance with Wyless Plc is the ability to offer pier-to-pier, real-time GPRS data communications over a secure virtual private network (VPN), based upon fixed IP address Internet technology.

Unlike conventional GPRS which is geared towards downloading data using dynamic IP addresses, we have configured our connectivity to offer up-load, down-load and pier-to-pier data transfer without the need to invest in any infrastructure or risk of exposure to the public Internet. Our GPRS coverage is not only National but Global making it ideal for bus services, both Nationally and Internationally. Operation within the VPN is highly secure and eliminates the risk of hacking and denial of service, which is only too common with the Internet.

Highly efficient data compression within the transport layer permits live update of time tables and the ability for the first time to take secure on-line credit and charge card payments on buses for tickets. In truth the applications are almost unlimited and provide bus operators and private organisations alike a real alternative to PMR and Tetra services.
